For a brief couple of weeks each year, the general population goes into "feel good", "be inspired" mode. Believe me, I have no problem with that, what with the constant bombardment of horrific news about war, murder, and so forth. Good news, happy smiles and proclamations of "the reason for the season" are a welcome relief. Christmas inspiration. We all need it and we'd sure like to see it last all year.
Looking back over the past twelve months, this year has been one of highs and lows, and of ups and downs for me. I've been determined, however, to concentrate on those events or moments that have inspired me. Among the chief source of celebration was our 50th wedding anniversary. We, like everyone else, have had our challenges but a commitment to each other has resulted in an ever-deepening love and dedication to each other.
Speaking of deep love, recently I've been blessed to observe one of the most inspiring examples I've seen of commitment. In my daily walks, I meet an older couple out walking. He, seemingly, in perfect health; she, on the other hand, afflicted with dementia. This gentleman goes to the care home every morning and takes her to town to walk hand-in-hand through the mall and around parts of town. Together they fill their mornings with smiles and laughter; later, he tells me, she doesn't remember a thing. Just watching them inspires me.
As we enter this new year, we all need reasons for hope and inspiration. My challenge to you and to myself is to do all we can to encourage someone else. I'll never bless the entire world but by the grace of God I can be a godsend to someone. And, so can you.
"Therefore encourage and comfort one another and build up one another...." 1Thessalonians 5:11
